这首“Tom’s Diner”是歌手Suzanne Vega 1982年写的一首叙事民谣，看似很简单流水账的歌词，但却很有意思，充斥着寂寞和伤感，是离别前的释然。

1981年11月18日清晨，天下着小雨，Suzanne又来到这家“Tom’s Restaurant”喝咖啡。这家饭店位于纽约上城第112街和百老汇街交界处，小饭馆的饭菜做得并不可口但价钱还算便宜。店伙计给Suzanne倒咖啡倒了一半便把她丢下不管跑去和一个刚进门的熟识的女顾客打招呼，于是Suzanne只好自己往咖啡里加牛奶了。顺手拿起当天的《纽约邮报》看了起来，上面讲到了一个她不认识的女演员的死讯，Suzanne不感兴趣，又去翻看漫画版，此时意外的发现窗外一个女人朝她看，Suzanne看着那个女人才发现她并没有看她，而是看玻璃镜中的自己．．．．．．

这些原本马赛克式的琐事组合就在那时那地深深的触动了这个孤独敏感的女人。Suzanne觉得自己像一家冰冷的照相机，蓦然的注视着周围发生的一切，却没有了自己的想法，纯粹一个旁观者；另一方面，又觉得人与人之间身影可以隔得那么近，心灵却依旧离得那么远。这些情绪恐怕在大城市生活的人都曾有过，但Suzanne却没有让那些情绪轻易消散，于是就有了这首《Tom’s Diner》。

教学建议：

文章讲述的是一天早上，在Toms Diner里的所见所闻。建议老师先放第一遍歌曲，让学生感知歌曲的大意。放第二遍歌曲，让学生找出歌曲中所有关于现在进行时态的结构。放第三遍歌曲的时候，要求学生抓住关键词，用现在进行时态复述歌曲中提到的人物正在进行的动作。只要学生能够运用be(am/is/are)+doing这个结构，就达到教学目的了。
